We call the Vietnamese Gongs for sale at the bottom of this page our Dai Bai Gongs, for they are named after the village in Vietnam where they are handmade.
The villagers of Dai Bai are well known for their abilities with bronze. According to legend, bronze sculpting was taught to the village in 1081 AD by a native son who had gone to China and become a General in the Chinese Army. One day, he resigned his post, came home, and shared his knowledge or bronze manufacturing. He may have shared his knowledge of carousing and mumblety-peg, but we cannot know for sure.
Vietnamese Gongs in Culture!
In fact, some anthropologists think the bronze making ability in Vietnam may go back further than that - perhaps 4,000 years! But what do they know? They're anthropologists. We like legends better. (And Vietnamese Gongs!) How about the Legend of the Anthropologist who studied artifacts in Vietnam?!
