MEINL Symphonic Gongs (aka Tam Tams) are made in Meinl's German factory by hand.
They are made from a specially German formulated Nickel Silver Alloy. (From what we have been told, this series' alloy is 24% zinc, 64% copper, 12% nickel, also known as N12.) They are all protected with a special wax.
MEINL Symphonic Gongs are available in diameters from 24" to 40".
The MEINL Symphonic Gongs are different from the Paiste Symphonic Gongs in that they are tuned. (Paiste Planet Gongs are tuned, but not their Symphonic Gongs.)
They are tuned to a specific half-tone range. They are gongs, of course, so there are many harmonious overtones after the initial note. However, this tuning assures that there is much care in their manufacture.
- 24" Gong: G2 - G#2
- 28" Gong: E2 - F2
- 32" Gong: C#2 - D2
- 36" Gong: A#1 - B1
- 40" Gong: G1 - G#1
Of course, these are gongs, and besides the tuning, each individual gong, is a unique piece of metal, and has its own sound character, due to it's nature, and then the hand-hammering process.
