Mehtab Benton is well-known for his work in integrating the music of the gong into yoga practices. He is the originator and the author of Gong Yoga, the first book detailing the relationship between gongs and yoga, the benefits of the practice, and instructions for the integration. Throughout his career he has trained hundreds of yoga teachers, therapists, and musicians in the art of playing the gong. Mehtab has played the gong for eighteen years in many different environments, spanning from concerts and workshops to yoga classes. His work in this specific field was the inspiration for the Gong Yoga Mela, an international gong celebration and training festival, where yogis from around the world can gather and embrace movement and music. He founded the Gong Yoga Teachers Association, where standards are set for those looking to earn a teaching certificate for gong yoga. He has put out a video course describing and actively showing his methods. His most recent book, Teaching Gong Yoga: Theory and Practice is the first comprehensive book on using gongs in all practices and traditions of yoga.
