In the Japanese language, "Fu" means wind, and "Rin" means bell. Hence this is a Wind Bell. Furin Bells came to Japan from China centuries ago.

Originally the bells were used in China to divine good or bad fortune by hanging in the forests. They migrated into Japanese temples and wealthy and noble homes, and were used to ward off evil spirits.

Started as bronze bells, later on Japan also began making furin out of glass.

Furin can fill the air in the summer in Japan. Hanging from windows and eaves, when the breezes blow, the Furin sing.

The strip of paper that hangs from the clapper is called a "tanzaku." When the wind blows the tanzaku causes the clapper to strike the side of the Furin.
