How could we not name a Vietnamese Gong after the first Vietnamese Person in Space?

PHAM TUAN! You are awesome for your courageous nature!

Who is Pham Tuan?

Well, he joined the Vietnam People’s Air Force in 1965, during that time when the USA was focused on messing with the politics and property of Vietnam. All in the name of a theory named after the singer Fats Domino. It was called the Domino Theory!

During the nastiness of the Vietnam War, Pham flew combat missions against USA fighter planes (We forgive him, after all we dropping napalm on his land.)

The Vietnamese Communists claimed Tuân was the first Vietnam Pilot to shoot down an American B-52 bomber, but the United States Military claimed that B-52s were brought down only by surface-to-air missiles. Who knows in the fog of war?!

All Gongs Unlimited knows is we want to end this fog. Wars are not healthy for people or gongs! Use that metal for guns to make musical instruments! Then the only wars we will have will be the Battles of the Bands!

In 1979, Vietnam selected Tuân to represent the reunified country in the Soviet Union’s Intercosmos program.

That was Intercosmos, people! Not the Soviet's Intercourse program. That happened in various seedy Moscow hotels.

In the Intercosmos program, non-Soviets went into Space with Soviet crews on routine missions staged to demonstrate solidarity in their mission of not actually doing what Karl Marx discussed and instead running totalitarian hostels.

So in 1980, Tuân went into space on the Soyuz 37 with cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko. for about eight days, including six days on the Salyut 6 space station.

Once back on Earth, Tuân walked funny for a little bit and then was soon named a Hero of the Soviet Union _ that came with a lot of medals and some decent tasting vodka. He was also celebrated as a Vietnamese national hero and was named a Lieutenant General in the Vietnamese Air Force. He later was named chairman of the General Department for Defense Industry.

AND OF COURSE... The Vietnamese David Bowie sang a similar song to the English Bowie’s hit, Major Tom, for his nation’s Cosmonaut, entitled Major Tuan.

Ground Control to Major Tuan
Ground Control to Major Tuan
Take your protein Pho and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tuan
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may Thánh Gióng be with you

Spoken:
Muoi
Chín
Tám
Bảy
Sáu
Năm
Bốn
Ba
Hai
Mota
Lift-off

This is Ground Control to Major Tuan
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose Ao Dai you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

“This is Major Tuan to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the sao look very different today

For here
am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Trái Dất is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand kilometers
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my vợ I love her very much (she knows!)
Ground Control to Major Tuan
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear me, Major Tuan?
Can you hear....

Am I floating round my tin can
Far above Mặt Trăng
Trái Dất is blue is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.
